Audi A1 Wins Car of the Year at What Car? Awards 2011

2011 Audi A1

Following on from being voted Most Exciting Car in 2010 by readers of What Car?, the new Audi A1 has won the overall Car of the Year 2011 award from the magazine.

The A1 was lauded for being "the right car at the right time", "combining desirability with ability". The judges went on to say that it "comes across as every inch a bespoke premium product" that "oozes quality everywhere you look and from everything you touch". In short, "you won’t find better at this price."

What Car?'s editor in chief Steve Fowler said that the A1 was "brilliantly targeted", given that increasing numbers of buyers "are looking for smaller, more efficient cars, but with all the luxury trappings of much larger cars. That’s exactly what Audi has given them – a super-stylish, high quality small car that’s affordable and great fun, too."

The Audi rep who accepted the award said that this seal of approval was among the most competed and difficult to win worldwide, and would give buyers "great confidence", given that What Car? are "experts who we know are exceptionally thorough in their testing".

Nor was that the only award won by the A1; it was also named Best Supermini 2011, being described by judges as "the ultimate downsizer’s transportation".

Audi's UK director Jeremey Hicks said that the awards were "an incredible honour".

And just to put the icing on the cake, the Audi TT won Coupe of the Year for the fifth year running. Singled out for particular mention was the TT's cornering, with judges remarking that the "strong grip and body control means it changes direction like a housefly, while the responses from the steering, throttle and brakes are razor-sharp. This is a sports car with real finesse."

Overall the Coupe was said to be "better than it has ever been".
