Latest Volkswagen Jetta has been restyled and retooled

An early peek at the new Volkswagen Jetta (available in the UK in early 2011) reveals major design changes and new engines. So what's new?

The Look
Every panel has been redesigned in keeping with VW's Golf/Jetta hybrid, the New Concept Coupe.

The Space
A 7cm longer wheelbase and 9cm overall length increase means nearly 7cm more legroom in the back, and 510 litres of storage space with the rear seats folded.

The Engines
Alongside the existing 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesel engines and the 1.4 and 2.0 litre petrol engines, VW have added two more petrol options; a 1.2 litre and twincharged 1.4 litre. All engines will be turbocharged.

BlueMotion
The new 1.2 litre petrol and 1.6 litre diesel will now have the benefit of Volkswagen's BlueMotion fuel-saving technology including Kinetic Energy Storage (which charges the battery more efficiently) and 'StartStop' (which allows the engine to turn off and on simply and easily when stuck in traffic). As a result the petrol engine will do a little over 53mpg, with the diesel capable of 68 mpg. CO2 output is as low as 109 g/km.

Inside
The dashboard has been revisited, with aluminium has been used to highlight features. The new steering wheel is leather-trimmed. A multifunction display to control the CD player, stereo and air-conditioning is standard. Touchscreen SatNav is also available.

Although it won't be available in the UK until early 2011, prices are likely to start at around £17K. Volkswagen are no doubt hoping that this latest Jetta will make the marque as popular here as it has is in the US, where it is not only their top-selling car, but THE top-selling European car.
