The 2010/2011 5-cylinder Audi RS3 Sportback

Audi RS3 Sportback 2010/11

This new 'top of the line' A3 is the latest Audi model to be built in Hungary, alongside the TT Coupe, TT Roadster and A3 Cabriolet.

The RS3 Sportback is based on the 5-door Sportback A3, with a five cylinder TFSI direct injection 2.5 litre petrol engine (first used in the TT RS and winner of an international 'Engine of the Year' award) and a seven-speed S-tronic twin-clutch transmission and 'quattro' four wheel drive, although it sits 2.5cm lower than its A3 cousin.

The transmission has two automatic modes and one manual mode, and gears can be changed using steering wheel paddles as well as the gearstick.

The engine is light (183 kilos), compact (just over 19 inches long) incredibly efficient, and offers maximum torque from about 1600 rpm through to 5300 rpm. The result? 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and a (electronically limited) top speed of 155 mph; yet on a combined cycle it will achieve 31mpg and CO2 output is 212g/km.

The RS3 Sportback features Audi's new energy recovery system (which recovers energy when decelerating) and uses alternative materials such as vermicular-graphite cast iron for the engine (Audi were the first manufacturer to use this material in a petrol engine), aluminium for the suspension, and carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the body to save weight.

The rack-and-pinion steering direct gear ratio is 16.2:1 for sharp turns, and Audi's 'ESP' electronic stability program has a 'sport' setting that delays automatic intervention with the acceleration and braking systems to increase driver control. ESP can be switched off entirely if desired, although this is only anticipated for circuit driving.

Included with the standard specification are xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, electric heating and ventilation, and SatNav with MMI (MultiMedia Interface) functionality.

The Audi RS3 Sportback is now available for ordering and is expected to ship in April 2011.
