Volkswagen » Crafter

Coming from a Volkswagen / DaimlerChrysler collaboration, the Crafter has a fair amount in common with the 2006 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. This competent all-rounder strikes a good point between performance and economy with its 109bhp engine. It has good cabin accommodation, with adjustable height and reach on the steering wheel, and the gear lever close to it to keep the footwell clear. All models are six-speed rear-wheel drives with driver's airbag as standard. Good suspension, ABS brakes and an electronic stability system help it to be surprisingly agile and hold the road well for a vehicle this size, with minimal body roll. Although it weighs more and is larger than its predecessor, and also meets Euro 4 emissions requirements, the Crafter is nearly as cheap to run. Easy to remove bumpers and other replaceable components aim to make servicing quick and easy, and when you think that there are over 80 Volkswagen Van Centres in the UK, 90% of drivers are within three quarters of an hour's drive from approved after-sales support and maintenance.
