Cairoli's comeback and the Desmo450 MX shine bright at Matterley Basin

From 20 to 22 June, the iconic Matterley Basin track near Winchester, Hampshire, set the stage for the twelfth seasonal event of the FIM Motocross World Championship. The event marked the much-anticipated return of nine-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli to MXGP competition, as he joined the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX team aboard a third official Desmo450 MX.

Cairoli, a legendary figure in motocross, lined up alongside teammates Jeremy Seewer and Mattia Guadagnini, completing a formidable Ducati trio. The Sicilian rider had already made an appearance on the Desmo450 MX earlier in the season at the Grand Prix of Trentino, but his return to Matterley Basin carried special significance.

Ducati Desmo450 MX – crafted for victory, ridden by a legend

The British track holds a rich history for Cairoli. Between 2011 and 2021, he claimed six premier-class victories there, cementing his dominance at the venue. His most iconic win came in 2006 during the Grand Prix of Nations which was the first race ever hosted on the British track, where he claimed victory on a 250, against the more powerful 450s.

Backed by a passionate crowd and riding a competitive machine – the Desmo450 MX – Cairoli’s return was a major highlight of the weekend, reinforcing both his legacy and Ducati’s growing presence in motocross.
