Winter doesn’t just bring the cold, it brings new challenges on the road – especially when you’re riding on two wheels. At Ducati Cambridge, we want every rider to feel confident, prepared and ready to take on whatever the season throws their way. Riding should be a joy all year round, and the winter chill shouldn’t hold you back.

Read and see the road clearly
Winter roads bring a mix of wet surfaces, cold air, soggy leaves, gravel and road salt. As a rider, you’re closer to the ground and far more exposed, which makes it easier for these elements to impair your vision. Stay one step ahead by scanning the road ahead, anticipating hazards early and adjusting your speed accordingly. Clear sight equals clear decision-making.
Light and shadows – spotting hidden hazards
Colder weather increases the risk of ice, especially in shaded areas. Even if main routes are gritted, overhanging trees, bridges or high hedges can create cold patches where ice lingers. Approach these areas cautiously and be ready for reduced traction.
Low winter sun can also bounce off wet roads, making it harder for both you and other drivers to see. Stay mindful of sun glare, ride with appropriate spacing and be extra visible to those around you.
Stay warm, stay safe, stay focused
Before heading out, make sure you’re wearing waterproof, windproof layers that seal properly around your neck, cuffs and waist to keep cold drafts away. Even with the right gear, it’s best to take a short break every hour. Cold muscles reduce your ability to brake, steer and react quickly. Look out for signs that you need to warm up: cold hands or feet, shivering, shallow breathing or reduced coordination. If any of these occur, stop somewhere safe for warm food or a hot drink and move your body around before continuing.
Awareness of other road users
Drivers who haven’t fully defrosted their windows or mirrors can become unexpected hazards. Keep an eye out for cars emitting heavy exhaust fumes – a sign they’ve only just been started and may have reduced visibility. Give them extra space and stay alert.
Winter-ready bike maintenance
Cold weather affects your bike differently – here’s what to keep an eye on:
Tyre pressure
Below 10°C, tyre pressure can drop by 2 to 3psi, affecting steering and braking. It may not sound like much, but if your tyre pressure is already running low, it can make your steering feel heavy and your brakes unstable. It’s advisable to check your tyres regularly and keep them topped up.
Front brake
Your front brake should feel smooth. On slippery surfaces, load the brake progressively and shift your weight forward to maximise grip.
Battery health
Lower temperatures thicken the oil, causing your battery to work harder. We advise that when your engine is off, check the battery’s voltage. In good condition, it should read at least 12.6V.
Lights
Ensure your headlights and taillights are clear of dirt and debris and are correctly adjusted for the best visibility and that both your dipped and main beams are functioning properly.
Chain care
Even though the salt and grit are good for icy roads as you travel, they’re no friend to your motorbike chain. It’s even more important in the winter months to make sure you keep on top of cleaning and lubricating your chain. Or you can install an autolube system like a Scottoiler, which measures the amount of oil required on the chain.
Rust prevention
Salt accelerates corrosion on the parts of your bike. Using an anti-corrosion spray and maintaining a regular cleaning routine will ensure that these components remain protected.
A clear visor
The cold and wet can make your visor mist up more than usual. You may want to consider installing an anti-fog insert into your visor to help.
